OHIO RESIDENTIAL HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION

Article by BPBS attorney Joseph Jaap, 513 533-2037

Recent changes to Ohio law eliminated the income test, so more homeowners now qualify for the tax exemption, but the exemption is not automatic. The filing deadline is June 2, 2008.

Once you or your spouse reach age 65, or become disabled, you must file an application to begin receiving the exemption. Once you begin receiving the exemption, renewal is not required. However, if you move into a new home, then you must re-apply.

If you already receive the tax exemption on your county real estate tax bill, no further action is required. You should have received a continuation notice in March if you currently receive the exemption. You can call your County Auditor to confirm.
